After waking up in Kayenta (I think... as the days are running into one another) we were heading for Lake Powell and Vermillion region. But before leaving we went to the Navajo's Monument Valley in Utah. Here we learned more about the Navajo Code Talkers and their important contributions to WWII along with taking in the amazing scenery. But most impressive are the "monuments" or spires found on the desert floor of the canyon. Disappointing is the fact that if I collected and got the nickle for every beer bottle I saw along the side of the road our trip would be paid. Perhaps alcoholism is as bad as they say. At least the tourist places are pristine but not where the regular folks live.
On to Lake Powell, well actually the Glen Canyon Dam, which was built to not only generate electricity but to control flooding of the Colorado River. It is a top 5 dam in all categories - size, concrete used, electricity produced. Lake Powell was formed when the dam was constructed and has since become a popular recreation site - boating etc. Seeing such a beautiful lake with all that water in the middle of a desert is another one of those things difficult to get one's head around.
To include a bit of exercise in today's agenda we took a hike by Horseshoe Bend Overlook on the Colorado River. The trail was 3/4 mile through the desert and led directly to the EDGE of the cliffs with a drop of over 1000 feet with NO Freakin' FENCE!!!!! - not for the faint of heart. But the view was worth it. I can't imagine the Grand Canyon- I'd better wear my depends - Ha Ha!
Called it an early day. Found a cheap, clean hotel that serves a free hot breakfast - always a huge priority for each day. Ate diner at a Texas BBQ spot. Got more of the scoop of the region from a local and we are set for tomorrow's visit to Vermillion Cliffs and then on to Zion and Bryce.
View from our hotel - not bad eh! |
