Day 15 - Roswell to Santa Fe

We survived the evening in Roswell and were not abducted by aliens.  Three hours of driving on a sunny crisp day brought us to the lovely city of Santa Fe.  We were surprised to see some snow along the side of the road but one guide reminded us that Santa Fe is 7000 feet above sea level.  You can see the snow covered mountains in this picture.

The Main Plaza was our first stop and once again we had the opportunity to enjoy the Spanish flavor of a town.
From there it was on to the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis Assisi where a docent gave us an informative history of the church and area.  The "locals" always have the best insights and we always seek them out to find the out of the way places.

In front of the church was a statue of one of our newest saints - Kateri Tekakwitha - who here is dressed in traditional Pueblo garb.  She was originally from the Utica area.
For lunch we tried something new - a Mexican stew called Posole and the corn chowder wasn't bad either.
A one hour tour of the Palace of the Governors along with a visit to the New Mexico Historical Museum gave us background on the history of the area.
I just love the vibrancy and colors associated with the southwest - so just walking around Santa Fe was a joy.  All of our city visits have been eye-opening.

Tomorrow we hope to visit Loretto Chapel before we head out of town - I'm not sure where we're headed.... Ron hasn't set our agenda yet. Actually he says he has and to break up a long drive we're heading to Canyon de Chelly National Park in the Navajo Reservation on the border of New Mexico and Arizona and stopping at anything of interest along the way as we'll be off the beaten path.  Although in this region of the country I don't believe there is a beaten path.  We are literally driving 30, 40, 50 miles and not seeing a single house and so many towns are abandoned!
